San Diego County Beaches Under Hazardous Surf Advisory With Waves Up to 8 Feet

SAN DIEGO, California — A hazardous surf advisory is in effect for San Diego County beaches through late Tuesday, with forecasters warning of dangerous conditions for swimmers, surfers, and boaters.

According to the National Weather Service, the powerful swell is fueled in part by remnants of former Hurricane Narda and is expected to generate waves between 4 and 7 feet, with occasional sets reaching 8 feet at south and southwest-facing breaks.

Rip Currents and Boating Risks

The NWS cautioned that rip currents strong enough to capsize small boats will be present near shore. In addition, large waves could wash beachgoers from rocks and jetties into open water.

“Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea,” the advisory warned. “Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore.”

Beaches Most Affected

The most hazardous conditions are expected along south-facing beaches, where the surf will be strongest. Lifeguards across the county are urging beach visitors to stay alert and obey posted warnings.

Meanwhile, sea surface temperatures are expected to remain in the 63- to 67-degree range, adding to the risks for anyone caught in rip currents or unexpectedly swept into deeper waters.

Advisory Timeline

  • Issued by: National Weather Service, San Diego
  • In Effect: Early Sunday through late Tuesday
