Cook County Weather Alert: Intense Lake Michigan Snow Bands Could Dump Over 2 Inches Per Hour

Chicago, IL – A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for Cook County from late Sunday through Monday afternoon, as powerful lake-effect snow bands are expected to develop along Lake Michigan, bringing whiteout conditions, gusty winds, and potentially over six inches of snow across the Chicago area.

Forecast Overview

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the heaviest snow bands will form late Sunday night and persist into Monday morning, particularly near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Areas including Evanston, Rogers Park, and downtown Chicago could experience snowfall rates exceeding two inches per hour.

Strong north winds up to 35 mph will drive snow sideways, dropping visibility to near zero at times and creating dangerous travel conditions on I-90, I-94, and Lakeshore Drive.

Travel and Safety Concerns

Emergency officials are urging residents to finish outdoor plans early Sunday and avoid nonessential travel Monday morning.

“With snow falling at rates this high, even a few miles of driving can become treacherous within minutes,” officials warned.

Commuters should keep emergency kits, top off gas tanks, and check travel advisories before heading out. Untreated bridges and overpasses could ice up quickly, especially during the early morning commute.

Public transit and city services may also face delays or reduced operations if conditions worsen overnight.

Veterans Day and Temperature Drop

The storm is expected to ease by Veterans Day, leaving behind cold, breezy weather with highs in the low 40s. Sunshine may briefly return before another Arctic air surge arrives midweek, keeping temperatures below seasonal averages.

Five-Day Forecast for Cook County

  • Sunday: 36°/29° – Rain changing to snow; gusts 25–35 mph near lake.
  • Monday: 36°/29° – Heavy lake-effect snow; 2″/hr possible; slick roads.
  • Tuesday: 43°/30° – Partly sunny, breezy; gradual clearing.
  • Wednesday: 50°/37° – Bright, calm; chilly morning.
  • Thursday: 53°/40° – Mild, dry; good for post–Veterans Day events.

Community Advisory

Residents should stay alert to updated weather statements and allow extra travel time as crews work to clear major routes. The early snow event marks the first true taste of winter for the Chicago area.
