Severe Storms Expected Overnight as NWS Warns of Tornado and Hail Threat Across Southwest Louisiana
LAKE CHARLES, LA — The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is warning residents across southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas to prepare for a potentially dangerous round of overnight storms as a strong cold front pushes through late Monday into early Tuesday.
Forecasters say the setup could produce damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, large hail, and isolated tornadoes, with conditions most favorable for rotating storms across communities from Beaumont and Port Arthur through Lake Charles and Alexandria.
Damaging Winds, Large Hail, and Tornado Potential Overnight
The most intense weather is expected to develop late Monday night and continue into the early hours Tuesday. With most of the severe threat occurring while residents are asleep, meteorologists emphasize the need for multiple ways to receive alerts, including NOAA weather radios, Wireless Emergency Alerts, and local media.
Storms may develop quickly, and isolated tornadoes could spin up with little notice.
Storm Timing and Impact Areas
The highest-risk zone includes:
- Southeast Texas: Beaumont, Port Arthur
- Southwest Louisiana: Lake Charles, Sulphur
- Central Louisiana: Alexandria and surrounding parishes
Forecasters say these areas have the strongest instability and wind shear support for supercell development.
Heavy Rain Helpful — But Winds Could Still Cause Damage
While the rainfall will benefit drought-stricken regions, the storms could still bring localized power outages, tree damage, or minor structural impacts from high winds.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, review safety plans, and stay weather-aware through the overnight hours.
