Alabama Mother Learns in Court That 7-Year-Old Son Died After 90 mph Crash She Allegedly Caused; Father Says She Has Severe Anxiety Issues
MOBILE COUNTY, ALABAMA — A 34-year-old Alabama mother accused of causing a high-speed crash that killed her 7-year-old son learned of his death for the first time during a court hearing, where prosecutors also revealed new details about the chaotic events leading up to the tragedy. Her father, who attended the hearing, says she struggles with severe anxiety and can “go from 1 to 100” when overwhelmed.
Mother Allegedly Fled Officers With Children in SUV Before Fatal Crash
According to investigators, Delyshia Molette was arrested on Nov. 4 after crashing her Infiniti SUV at speeds reaching 90 mph with her two young sons inside. The crash killed her 7-year-old and injured her 11-year-old.
During an earlier bond hearing, Molette reacted with shock and disbelief when informed in court that her youngest child had died, reportedly shouting:
“Did you say he died? My 7-year-old died?”
She had not been told of the boy’s death until that moment, authorities said.
Prosecutors: Shoplifting Incident, Officer Assault, and Attempted Escape Preceded the Chase
New details presented in court outline how the situation escalated hours before the crash.
According to prosecutors:
- Molette allegedly attempted to steal hamburger meat and dog toys from a grocery store.
- When approached by employees, she reportedly threatened them with a weapon.
- Responding officers say she fought violently, attempting to gouge an officer’s eyes and biting another’s finger.
- She allegedly fled on foot before being tracked home later that night.
Investigators say that once found, Molette placed her sons in her SUV and attempted to drive to Georgia, believing she could avoid Alabama authorities taking custody of her children.
Police began a pursuit but terminated it when they realized children were inside the vehicle. Moments later, Molette reportedly lost control of the SUV, resulting in the fatal crash.
Father Defends His Daughter, Citing Family History of Anxiety
Outside the courtroom, Molette’s father Douglas Molette spoke about his daughter’s history of mental-health struggles, saying she often reacts intensely when overwhelmed.
He explained that anxiety runs in their family:
“When you walk into a store and someone follows you, for some people anxiety kicks in. Whether intentional or not, she went from 1 to 100.”
He added:
“My family has a history of anxiety issues. When things get too much, we go from 1 to 100 real quick. She does the same.”
Molette’s father described the charges against her as “excessive,” insisting she did not intend to harm her children or flee in a way that would put them in danger.
Mother Facing Multiple Felony Charges
Molette currently faces a long list of charges, including:
- Manslaughter
- Robbery
- Assault
- Resisting arrest
- Attempting to elude law enforcement
She is due back in court as the case continues to unfold, with prosecutors emphasizing the severity of the events leading up to her son’s death.
