Alaska Weather Turns Bitter as Fairbanks Braces for Subzero Nights and Clear, Sunny Days

FAIRBANKS, AK — The National Weather Service in Fairbanks says Interior Alaska is entering a sharply colder stretch this week as skies clear and Arctic air sinks into the region, dropping temperatures well below zero through midweek.

Forecasters report that clouds will thin out late Sunday into Monday, allowing colder and drier air to dominate much of the Interior. With sunshine returning, daytime highs will stay in the single digits, and nights are expected to plunge deeper into subzero territory.

Sunny Skies, Bitter Nights Across Interior Alaska

Fairbanks residents can expect highs around 6°F on Monday and just 3°F on Tuesday, with overnight lows slipping between –2°F and –5°F as the coldest air settles in.

The pattern extends far beyond the city. Other Interior locations — Denali Park, Eagle, Bettles, and surrounding areas — will see similar conditions marked by clear skies, bright sunshine, and daytime temperatures that barely rise above zero.

Despite the frigid forecast, winds are expected to remain light, reducing wind chill risk compared to earlier cold snaps.

Cold Stretch Will Linger Through Midweek

NWS meteorologists say this Arctic air mass will keep temperatures low for several days, creating a quiet but extremely cold start to the week. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit extended time outdoors, and prepare for prolonged freezing weather.

Calm skies and bright sun will help travel and visibility across the region, but the deep freeze will remain the dominant story for Interior Alaska.
