By Zoe Blakeman
Nashville-based artist BIZZY releases a new cinematic rock single, “When It Ends,” with collaborator Brandon Meagher. BIZZY talks about her new single, the creative processes behind it, and her debut tour supporting FRENSHIP.
Check out the Q&A below for more insights on BIZZY’s musical journey!
ZB: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your new single “When It Ends” and how it reflects your journey as a young adult navigating life?
B: “When It Ends” was written at a time in my life when it felt like I was holding everything together by a thread. It would all crumble if I made the wrong move or said the wrong thing. I wrote it out of a place of fear, kind of crying out to my family and friends, saying, “Hey, if this thing I’m building goes to crap, will you still love me?” It’s the fear of being abandoned at your weakest.
ZB: “When It Ends” has been described as transitioning from an ethereal beginning to a cinematic, stadium-rock experience. How did you and your producer approach crafting this dynamic sound?
B: Ooo, first off, I LOVE that description. Honestly, we went into this song head first with the emotion leading. We didn’t go in with reference tracks or try to make it sound like something else we’ve heard. We wanted to let the emotions and lyrics pave the way, so the gradual build you hear in the production is the desperation in my vocals and lyrics getting louder and louder.
ZB: Your debut EP, “I Don’t Get Breakups,” received acclaim from various sources. How does your new single, “When It Ends,” fit within the narrative of your musical journey so far?
B: It’s funny because this is the first song I’ve released that’s not about a relationship. It has been really cool to sort of turn the mirror back on myself instead of pointing fingers at others in my songs and get to self-reflect.
ZB: You recently signed with Big Loud Rock, joining a roster of talented artists. How has this partnership influenced your music and career trajectory?
B: Yes! They have been the absolute best! It feels like I have this giant sports team behind me, backing me up in everything I do. They show up to EVERYTHING and have truly been such awesome champions in building my career while keeping my vision.
ZB: As you continue to evolve as an artist, how do you balance vulnerability and authenticity in your songwriting?
B: As of right now, I write completely from a diaristic point of view, without the intention of people hearing my music. I write purely to process my emotions, and then, obviously, I’ve ended up putting some of the songs out. I think it also allows other people to connect to my music because I’m writing from a real point of view. At a certain level, we all feel the same emotions—just in different circumstances.
ZB: Your music has been described as offering a fresh perspective on the alt-pop genre. What do you hope listeners take away from it?
B: The biggest thing I want people to take away (and I always say this, but it’s true) is that they aren’t alone. I want to be the one to say things that people might be too scared to say or don’t have the words for, so when they hear my music, they go, “OMG, yes, that’s exactly how I feel.” That’s my favorite part of listening to music: feeling so understood.
ZB: Can you share any memorable moments from your recent US tour supporting FRENSHIP? How has touring impacted your growth as an artist?
B: That tour was simply THE BEST!! My favorite memory has to be meeting the fans. I went to different cities I had never been to before, and having people sing my lyrics back to me was surreal! The tour helped me grow so much as an artist because it allowed me to connect with my music in a completely new and exciting way.
ZB: Your success on TikTok with “Anybody” propelled your solo career. How do you navigate the intersection between social media and music promotion in today’s industry?
B: That is something me and my friends talk about all the time. It’s really hard to find a balance between using social media as a tool and letting it run your life. It’s a daily learning curve, but I’ve found that the more authentic I am on the platforms, the more excited I am to post and share because it doesn’t feel like work.
ZB: The visual imagery accompanying “When It Ends” adds depth to the song’s themes. Can you elaborate on the creative process behind the music video and how it enhances the listener’s experience?
B: Yes! The visuals were so fun to shoot. I came up with the concept while I was recording “When It Ends.” I would close my eyes and listen to the song, and usually, when I listen to music, I get a little movie in my head of what I imagine it would look like. This time, it was me and a big red coat running through a wide-open field, so I told my team, and we figured out how to bring it to life!
ZB: The “When It Ends” music video showcases various visual elements and storytelling techniques. What inspired the aesthetic choices and symbolism in the video?
B: I really wanted the visual to match the feeling of the song. I felt so lost and scared while writing this song but also frantic and excited, so that’s why I chose the contrast of the red coat in the dark forest.
ZB: Looking ahead, what can fans expect from you in terms of future releases and artistic exploration?
B: I can’t say too much, but there is lots of new music!!! With a bit of a page turn on style:)
