Chicago Weather: Hazy Skies and High Heat to Grip the City This Week

CHICAGO — A classic stretch of summer heat is settling over the city this week, with temperatures soaring into the 90s, hazy skies from wildfire smoke, and only a slim chance of rain to offer relief.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, Tuesday will begin with more moderate highs in the mid-80s, under partly cloudy conditions. However, the heat will ramp up quickly — and Chicagoans should brace for some of the hottest temperatures of the season by midweek.
Wednesday and Thursday: Heat Nears Triple Digits
Forecast models show Wednesday and Thursday will bring peak heat across the city:
- 95°F expected along the lakefront
- 96°F at O’Hare International Airport
- Similar highs forecasted across suburban Cook County
Adding to the discomfort will be haze drifting in from distant wildfires, especially noticeable near the lake and northern zones close to the Wisconsin border. While air quality alerts haven’t been officially issued yet, visibility and breathing conditions may be impacted in vulnerable areas.
Rain Chances Low — But Not Zero
The week will remain mostly dry, with just slight chances for scattered showers late Wednesday into Thursday night. These brief bouts of rain may bring temporary relief, but widespread cooling isn’t expected until Friday.
By the weekend, there’s a higher likelihood of cloud cover and isolated rain, which could slightly drop temperatures — though the summer pattern is expected to continue into early next week.
Tips for Staying Safe in the Heat
As temperatures soar, local health officials remind residents to take precautions:
- Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or caffeine during peak hours
- Limit outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Use air conditioning or visit public cooling centers if needed
- Check on elderly neighbors and pets, who are especially vulnerable
