Coastal Onslow Under High Surf Advisory With Dangerous Rip Currents Through Wednesday

ONSLOW COUNTY, North Carolina — The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued a high surf advisory for Coastal Onslow, warning of hazardous beach conditions, flooding threats, and life-threatening rip currents through 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The advisory, released early Monday morning, calls for large breaking waves between 5 and 8 feet across the surf zone, creating a dangerous environment for swimmers, surfers, and boaters.
Flooding and Property Risks
Forecasters warn that minor inundation of 1 to 2 feet above ground level is possible in low-lying coastal areas, including roads, parking lots, parks, and waterfront properties.
Localized beach erosion is expected, with shallow flooding possible in some residential areas adjacent to the shoreline. The NWS cautions drivers not to drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roads.
Rip Current Danger
The NWS emphasized that life-threatening rip currents will be a serious hazard, especially around low tide, expected at approximately 7 p.m. Monday.
“If caught in a rip current, remain calm,” the agency advised. “Swim parallel to the shore to escape. If tired, float or tread water until you are free of the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.”
Inexperienced swimmers are urged to stay out of the water entirely until conditions improve.
