Concert Series Returns for 16th Season at Skypark in Scotts Valley

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA — The beloved Music at Skypark summer concert series is returning for its 16th season, bringing together live music, community spirit, and vital support for local arts education. The free outdoor series kicks off Sunday, August 24, at Skypark in Scotts Valley, continuing a tradition that has become a cornerstone of the community’s summer celebrations.

A Tradition of Music and Giving Back

Organized by the Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley, the concert series has grown into more than just an entertainment event. It has become a fundraising powerhouse, channeling all profits directly into local school music and arts programs. Since its inception, the event has raised nearly $250,000, helping ensure public school students in the Scotts Valley Unified School District have access to high-quality arts education.

As longtime Kiwanis member Jim Melehan explained, “Music at Skypark has become a true community event. It’s a chance for local folks from throughout the area to gather in a nice park setting and enjoy the best outdoor music around, with lots of good friends, food and drink. We’ve really hit our stride with families especially”.

Opening Day Lineup: Fishhook and Extra Large

The August 24 show will feature two powerhouse local bands.

  • Fishhook will take the stage first, performing from 1:30 to 3 p.m. with a setlist full of classic rock favorites delivered with their signature vocal and guitar-driven style.
  • Following them, Extra Large, a Santa Cruz favorite, will headline from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. Known for their horn section and irresistible blend of classic rock, blues, reggae, Latin beats, and funk, Extra Large has been a staple of the series for years and never fails to get the crowd dancing.

Concessions including food, beer, wine, and soft drinks will be available, with proceeds also supporting the school arts programs. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs, come hungry, and enjoy an afternoon of music in the park.

Looking Ahead: More Music in September

The series continues on September 28, with another exciting lineup. The Inciters, a 10-piece band led by three powerhouse female vocalists, will bring a high-energy mix of English rock, Jamaican ska, reggae, and New Wave. They will be followed by The Houserockers, longtime Skypark favorites with their horn-driven, foot-stomping sound, who have performed at the venue more than ten times.

Former music director Beth Hollenbeck emphasized the event’s importance: “Music at Skypark continues to be the main source of funding for our District’s music program. On behalf of our students, staff and administration, please know how deeply grateful we are for your support of this growing program. It’s no wonder the NAMM Foundation repeatedly awards Scotts Valley the ‘Best Community for Music Education’”.

The Music at Skypark series represents the best of what community music events can be — free, family-friendly entertainment that strengthens cultural life while directly benefiting local schools. With lively performances, good food, and a welcoming atmosphere, the 2025 season promises to be among its most memorable yet.
