Dense Fog Advisory Issued for More Than 25 Kentucky Counties as Visibility Drops Overnight
KENTUCKY — A widespread Dense Fog Advisory is in effect across more than two dozen counties in eastern, central, southern, and southeastern Kentucky, with drivers urged to prepare for dangerously low visibility through Sunday morning. Officials warn that visibility may fall to a quarter mile or less, creating hazardous travel conditions on rural roads, highways, and mountain passes.
The Areas Affected
The advisory covers a large stretch of Kentucky, including:
Menifee, Montgomery, Estill, Rowan, Bath, Powell, Jackson, Rockcastle, Laurel, Whitley, Knox, Clay, Fleming, Wolfe, Lee, Breathitt, Morgan, Perry, Leslie, Knott, Pulaski, Wayne, and McCreary counties.
Meteorologists say fog will be thickest in valleys and low-lying areas, especially before sunrise.
What Officials Are Saying
The National Weather Service noted that fog formation intensified rapidly late Saturday night and is expected to remain dense until about 10 AM EST Sunday.
“Visibility may drop suddenly in pockets of dense fog, giving drivers little time to react,” forecasters said.
“Anyone traveling overnight or early in the morning should slow down immediately when fog thickens.”
Drivers are already reporting difficulty seeing more than a few car lengths ahead in isolated stretches.
Hazards & Travel Impact
Low visibility can turn normal driving conditions dangerous, especially on winding Kentucky roadways.
Authorities warn that the dense fog could lead to:
- Sudden white-out conditions
- Missed road signs and turns
- Difficulty spotting pedestrians and wildlife
- Slower traffic and increased risk of collisions
Emergency teams across affected counties have been placed on higher alert.
Timing of the Advisory
- Start Time: November 22, 2025 at 11:46 PM
- End Time: November 23, 2025 at 10:00 AM EST
Officials say fog will gradually lift by late morning as temperatures rise.
Safety Tips for Drivers
Kentucky State Police and local agencies are urging all residents to use extra caution:
- Drive slowly and increase following distance
- Use low-beam headlights — not high beams
- Avoid sudden stops
- Allow extra time to reach your destination
- Pull over safely if visibility becomes too poor to continue
“If something feels unsafe, stop driving until conditions improve,” authorities advised.
