Florida Traffic Stop Leads to DUI Arrest and Discovery of Hidden Xanax Pills After Woman Allegedly Tried Concealing Drugs in Body Cavities

PALM COAST, FL — A Florida traffic stop that began with a red-light violation quickly escalated into a DUI arrest involving a toddler and the discovery of plastic-wrapped Xanax pills hidden in the driver’s body cavities, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Stops Vehicle After Red-Light Violation

The incident occurred on Nov. 29 after a deputy observed 27-year-old Kaylie Poe drive through a red light at the intersection of Palm Coast Parkway and Interstate 95. When the vehicle finally came to a stop, authorities found two passengers inside, including a 2-year-old child.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Poe showed clear signs of impairment, including slurred speech, watery and bloodshot eyes, delayed reactions, and unstable balance once she exited the vehicle.

Field Sobriety Tests Show Multiple Signs of Impairment

Poe agreed to perform field sobriety exercises, but deputies reported she demonstrated five of eight signs of impairment on one test, three of four on another, and six of six indicators of horizontal gaze nystagmus, a test that reveals involuntary eye movements associated with intoxication.

She was handcuffed and arrested for driving under the influence. At the jail, Poe submitted to two breathalyzer tests, both of which showed no alcohol level detected, but she refused a urine test, according to the sheriff’s report.

Deputies Find Xanax Pills Hidden in Clothing and Body Cavities

The situation intensified during intake at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. When instructed to remove her socks, Poe reportedly dropped seven and a half yellow rectangular Xanax pills concealed inside.

A further search revealed additional pills hidden inside her vaginal cavity, wrapped in clear plastic. Deputies also reviewed rear-compartment video footage showing Poe removing an item from her undergarment padding and placing it into her genital area.

Because of these findings, Poe now faces charges including:

  • Driving under the influence
  • Refusal to submit to DUI testing
  • Smuggling controlled substances
  • Possession with intent to sell
  • Tampering with evidence

Sheriff Says Suspect Tried to Outsmart Deputies

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly condemned the defendant’s actions, particularly because a toddler was inside the vehicle at the time of the DUI stop.

First, this woman did something incredibly dangerous and stupid by driving under the influence of drugs with a young toddler in the car. Then, on her way to the jail, she thought she would not get caught with Xanax trying to hide it in body cavities, but she got caught and now faces additional felony charges,” Staly said in a statement.

Poe was booked on a $9,000 bond, which she posted the following day. She is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 23.
