Iowa Winter Weather Alert: Snowfall of 1–3 Inches Expected by Noon Saturday

Carroll, IA – Western and northwest Iowa are bracing for slick travel conditions early Saturday, as a fast-moving winter system brings light to moderate snowfall across the region, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

Forecast Overview

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to noon Saturday, with 1–3 inches of snow expected and locally higher amounts possible in isolated areas.

Snow will begin before sunrise across communities including Carroll, Denison, Pocahontas, and Emmetsburg, gradually tapering off by midday. The system’s quick passage will limit overall totals but still create brief periods of reduced visibility and slippery roads during the morning commute.

Travel Conditions and Safety

Forecasters warn that surface temperatures will remain below freezing, leading to snow-covered and icy roads, especially along Highways 20 and 71.

“Even a couple of inches of snow can make a big difference on untreated roads,” the National Weather Service cautioned.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use extra care on bridges and rural roads, which may freeze first.

The Iowa Department of Transportation recommends checking the 511ia.org app or hotline before traveling for the latest updates on road conditions and closures.

Outlook

Snow is expected to end by early afternoon, with cloudy but calmer weather returning later in the day. However, lingering icy patches may persist into Saturday evening as temperatures remain near or below freezing.
