Jean Deaux Dives Deep on Her New EP “Nowhere, Fast,” Talking on Sounds, Collaborations, and Childhood Manifestations

By Zoe Blakeman

ZB: Can you tell us more about the themes and inspirations behind your upcoming EP, ‘Nowhere, fast’? How does it differ from your previous project ‘HEAVY’?

JD: “Nowhere, Fast” is the antithesis of heavy. Where heavy is bold and striking— NWF is soft and delicate. Floating and drifting while being held. Almost like gliding your hands through the ocean.

ZB: You mentioned that your new EP reflects on childhood manifestations and the dreams you’ve realized in your career. Could you share some specific experiences or moments that influenced the songs
on this project?

JD: My view of love and forgiveness as a child shaped this project. I learned to live and let live because I wasn’t fully allowed to live as a child. My dream was always to be free and to be happy with myself, and I wanted to explore what that meant.

ZB: Collaborations seem to be an integral part of your music journey. Can you talk about your creative process when working with other artists like Destin Conrad and how those collaborations contribute to the overall sound of your EP?

JD: The majority of my collaborations are built from friendships. Destin is one of my best friends; I know him artistically very well. It was easy to hear him on “Thinkin” and reach out. He’s also having a huge moment on his own right now, so I’m honored he made time to bless this project.

ZB: Your singles “Roll With Me” and “Dreamin” have received considerable attention. Can you provide some insight into the stories behind these songs and why you chose them as the lead singles for the EP?

JD: They just bang. Two bangers. That’s really it. Ha.

ZB: Being recognized as NPR’s ‘Artist to Watch’ is a significant achievement. How do you feel about the recognition, and has it impacted your approach to your music and career?

JD: Recognition is nice. Sometimes, it can be necessary. It hasn’t impacted my approach to music, but recognition at the right time has fed the organic growth of my listener base.

ZB: You’ve worked with an impressive list of artists in the past. Is there anyone you haven’t collaborated with yet but would love to work with in the future? What attracts you to collaborating with certain artists?

JD: I would love to work with Solange, Willow Smith, and Doechii. I just love people who have fun and go for it. Music is supposed to be challenging and impressive, in my personal opinion.

ZB: Your EP is being released in partnership with GUIN Records and Stem. How has your experience been working with these partners, and what do you think they bring to your music career?

JD: Guin is amazing and has been a breath of fresh air. It’s necessary to work with people who believe in you and understand your value. That’s how I feel now, being with Guin/Stem.
