Kinky Love Builds Brand, One Digital Music Element At A Time

Chicago is a metropolis of diversity, cultural richness and international appeal. Given such, it’s no wonder that the music group Kinky Love, offers music that is gravitationally eclectic, rich, robust and just downright catchy. When asked to describe their sound in three words, band member Dan Zima states: “Xoe’s smooth synth.” In addition to Zima, the group is comprised of Xoe Wise and Alan Shinkunas.

“It’s Xoe’s synth that gives our group a distinctive sound,” said Zima. “We take songs within a computer program and build upon them. We then make it our objective to make the music feel more human,” added Zima.

With their unmistakable sound and energy within Chicago, they thrive in one of the country’s largest cities and plant their creativity into making a sound that differs from others. “I think what sets us apart from other electronic and pop groups is our balanced and refreshing blend of electronic elements with live elements,” Wise stated. “In fact, we have enough evolution within our group to see, hear and capitalize on musical progression,” added Wise.

“We take musical elements, listen to them, study their structure and piece by piece, bit by bit, combine those elements with others to create a sound that is distinctive and hopefully memorable to our fan base,” added Wise.

So for Kinky Love members Xoe Wise (lead vocalists and synth player), Dan Zima ( keys) and Alan Shinkunas( keys and background vocals), it’s all about collaboration and helping to shape a distinctive, organic digital sound.

The Chicago synth pop group is gearing up for two live performances this summer. They will be playing Mamby on the Beach July 11th and 12th as well as Lincoln Hall in Chicago’s Lincoln Park on July 17th. They set their sights on innovation while drawing inspiration and motivation from other artists. “For me, it’s Junior Boys,” said Zima. In fact, Zima says that the Canadian electronic pop group founded in 1999, really set a set a precedent he truly admires. For Wise, she loves the ingenuity of both PJ Harvey and The Strokes.

The group is hard at work on their four-song Extended Play which is set for release within the coming months and they plan on entering back into their musical labs to continue their journey of digital musical exploration. With such songs as “Affair”, “Counting on Distance” and “Sugar”, Kinky Love has solidified themselves as a progressive musical entity, assured of longevity within the realms of digital musical landscapes.
