Larkin Poe Shows Lollapalooza What Real Rock n Roll Looks Like

Larkin Poe rocks hard. From the second their fingers hit the strings, sisters Megan and Rebecca Lovell sent Southern bluesy roots rock blasting through Lollapalooza.

Larkin Poe stands out from the pop and hip-hop heavy lineup at Lollapalooza. That didn’t stop the sisters from drawing a crowd of hundreds of fans filling the entire space around the BMI stage. This was not lost on the Lovell sisters.

“The fact that people are out at a festival and that people bothered to come and stand in front of the stage with us and rock out for music that is a little left of center for something like a Lollapalooza, music that is more stripped back, and definitely more rootsy and raw, that is so incredibly encouraging… Thank you so much to everybody that bothers to put the time in for music that’s a little left of center,” says Rebecca in her Georgian accent.

Larkin Poe is touring straight through the country until December, and their left-of-center show is worth catching. The band infuses “Bam-ba-Lam (Black Betty)” and Son House’s “Preachin’ Blues” with their own gritty, soulful sound. Larkin Poe’s original songs are every bit worthy of standing next to such illustrious classics. “Blue Ridge Mountain Memories” and “Freedom” are stand-out songs in their set, both clearly coming straight from the heart of the duo.

“I bet I will be like 55-years-old and singing that song and be like, there’s that same insecurity cropping back up!” says Rebecca, referencing the song “Freedom.”

But these women are certainly not letting insecurities rule their lives. In the wake of #MeToo, it is more widely acknowledged that the music business can still be a difficult world for women. But it never holds back the women of Larkin Poe.

At a recent music festival, one staffer assumed that their male supporting musicians, the talented Kevin McGowan (drums) and Kelly McCarty (electric bass), were Larkin Poe, and the Lovells were guests. But they never let this sort of ignorance get to them. In fact, it can be a bit entertaining.

“It can be fun to defy expectations,” says Megan.

“And as we get older, we care so much less what people think,” says Rebecca.

If the crowd at Lollapalooza is any judge, people clearly seem to think that Larkin Poe is awesome and Chicago Music Guide couldn’t agree more.
