Massachusetts Commuters Warned of Slick Roads as Early-Morning Snow Exits Boston Area
BOSTON, MA — Early Wednesday morning brought a round of snow and mixed precipitation across eastern and central Massachusetts, and while the system is moving out by sunrise, the National Weather Service (NWS) warns that slick and untreated roads may pose hazards for commuters across the region.
Snow Moves Out by 8 A.M., but Roads Stay Slick
A 3:30 a.m. update from NWS Boston/Norton noted that lingering snow and rain/snow showers would diminish between 7 and 8 a.m., leaving behind wet surfaces that can freeze in higher elevations and interior locations. Even light snowfall was enough to create slippery travel conditions on secondary roads, bridges, and shaded areas.
Communities such as Worcester, Springfield, Pittsfield, and surrounding towns in central and western Massachusetts are expected to see the most persistent slick spots through mid-morning due to colder surface temperatures.
Cold, Dry Weather Settles In This Afternoon
After the snow exits, forecasters expect seasonably cold and dry conditions statewide. High temperatures will reach the upper 30s to low 40s, with Boston forecast around 41°F, Worcester near 38°F, and the Berkshires hovering around 36°F.
Winds will remain light, but the cooler temperatures will create a chilly feel across much of Massachusetts, keeping road surfaces cold for much of the day.
Drivers Urged to Use Caution on Bridges and Secondary Roads
Transportation officials and meteorologists continue to urge residents to allow extra travel time this morning and remain alert for patchy black ice. Roads that appear merely wet could be slick in areas where temperatures briefly drop below freezing.
Drivers in central and western Massachusetts should be especially cautious during the morning commute due to colder temperatures and lingering moisture from overnight precipitation.
Dry Stretch Ahead Before Next Weather System
Skies are expected to gradually clear later Wednesday, setting up a quiet stretch of weather through Thursday. Forecasters are monitoring the next potential system that may approach the region by the weekend, possibly bringing more precipitation.
