Michael Franks Returns to Detroit’s Music Hall With New Music on the Horizon

DETROIT – Beloved jazz singer-songwriter Michael Franks is making his return to the Motor City, performing at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Aug. 16, in a concert presented by Hollywood Casino at Greektown. Known for his smooth tenor voice and sophisticated lyrics, the 80-year-old artist is also teasing new music for 2026.

A Four-Decade Love Affair With Detroit

For more than 40 years, Franks has been a staple on Detroit’s live music scene, consistently drawing sellout crowds. Fans eagerly join in on every lyric, especially hits from albums like The Art of Tea and The Music in My Head. He calls Detroit “my best city,” recalling his first Motor City gig at the now-demolished Ford Auditorium, which left him stunned by the packed audience.

Even with fewer tour stops in recent years, Franks has made sure to keep Detroit on his calendar. “People are still so appreciative of all those ancient tunes,” he told the Detroit Free Press.

New Album and Creative Projects

Franks isn’t just performing — he’s also working on a new studio album, expected in early 2026, his first in seven years. Four tracks are already near completion. The material grew out of musical ideas he explored during the pandemic, when he composed without lyrics but stockpiled promising melodies.

He’s recording in Catskill, New York, a hub for talented jazz musicians, including percussionist Mino Cinélu. Working locally has allowed him to collaborate in a more relaxed setting compared to flying in musicians from New York City.

In addition to the album, Franks and longtime singing partner Veronica Nunn are launching a podcast, The End of One, set for release this fall, and he’s also penning his memoirs.

A Stage History Across Detroit

Franks’ Detroit performances over the years have included the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre and Meadow Brook Amphitheatre. He recalls playing through a thunderstorm at the Aretha, impressed by how fans stayed despite the downpour.

Almost exactly a year after his last Motor City date, he’s eager to return to a city that has embraced him throughout his career.
