North Carolina Forecast Dec. 9–15: Winter Chill Holds On, But Clear Skies Keep Snow Away Statewide
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — North Carolina will hold onto its early-season chill next week, but winter weather impacts should remain minimal as moisture stays limited across the region. According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s 8–14 Day Outlook issued December 1, temperatures from December 9 through December 15 will run below normal statewide, while precipitation chances drop off significantly.
Cold but Quiet Week Ahead for Most of the State
Forecasters expect a stretch of sunny, brisk days paired with cold, frosty mornings, creating a classic early-winter feel without snow or ice headaches. Temperature trends include:
- Piedmont highs: Low 40s
- Coastal highs: Near 50°F
- Nighttime lows: 20s and 30s statewide
Cities such as Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro will feel the chill each morning, while afternoons bring clear skies and crisp sunshine.
Minimal Snow Chances Even in the Mountains
NOAA’s outlook shows below-normal precipitation, meaning most of North Carolina stays dry through the period. The mountains in western NC may see occasional clouds or a stray flurry, but forecasters do not expect any measurable snow next week.
Travel conditions across the state should remain favorable, with no major winter storm threats on the horizon.
National Weather Split: Warm West, Cold Southeast
A deep Arctic air mass continues to grip the eastern half of the country, while the West experiences the opposite side of the pattern:
- West Coast, Southwest, Texas: Above-average warmth and dry weather
- Southeast and Mid-Atlantic: Below-normal temperatures
This coast-to-coast temperature divide will shape the nation’s weather well into mid-December.
Cold Pattern Expected to Persist Until Mid-December
Meteorologists say the chilly pattern may linger a bit longer before a gradual warm-up closer to the holidays. Still, North Carolina should expect continued clear skies, dry weather, and cold mornings throughout the Dec. 9–15 period.
