North Dakota Severe Thunderstorm Watch: 9 Counties Remain at Risk Through Early Monday

NORTH DAKOTA — A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for large portions of western and central North Dakota through 1 a.m. Monday, as storm systems continue to bring heavy rain, damaging winds, and hail to the region.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that hazardous weather conditions could significantly impact travel and outdoor activity Sunday evening into early Monday morning.
Counties Under Watch
As of Sunday night, the thunderstorm watch includes nine counties, with recent expansion into parts of the south-central region. According to the NWS, the watch now covers:
- McKenzie
- Adams
- Billings
- Bowman
- Dunn
- Golden Valley
- Hettinger
- Slope
- Stark
Additionally, Grant and Sioux counties in the south-central zone have been placed under the advisory as well.
Cities most affected include Beach, Bowman, Dickinson, and Watford City, all of which are expected to experience heightened storm conditions overnight.
Storm Threats and Travel Hazards
The main concerns include:
- Wind gusts reaching 60 mph
- Large hail capable of damaging vehicles and buildings
- Heavy rainfall causing flash flooding and low visibility
- Blowing debris across rural roads and highways
Officials urge drivers to use extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in rural stretches where visibility may be significantly reduced. Residents are also advised to secure outdoor equipment and be prepared for sudden weather changes.
