Orlando Gibbons Honored in 400th Anniversary Concert at Westminster Abbey

Orlando — The legacy of Tudor composer Orlando Gibbons will be brought to life this September at Westminster Abbey, as St Margaret’s Consort presents a special 400th anniversary concert under the direction of Greg Morris.
The event marks four centuries since Gibbons’ death in 1625, celebrating his life, his music, and his lasting connection to St Margaret’s Church — where all seven of his children were baptized.
A Tribute in a Place of Personal Significance
As organist of Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal, Gibbons’ contributions to sacred and secular music cemented his place among the most melodic and inventive Tudor composers. The upcoming performance will feature some of his most beloved works, including:
- Church anthems and organ compositions
- A madrigal set to words by Sir Walter Raleigh, buried beneath St Margaret’s altar
- His most famous piece, The Silver Swan
The Ensemble and Its Rich History
The St Margaret’s Consort is a professional vocal ensemble providing choral music for many high-profile services at St Margaret’s Church, particularly those honoring prominent Parliamentarians. Choral traditions here date back to the church’s consecration in 1523, when composers like Nicholas Ludford and Robert Whyte were closely associated with the church’s music.
Greg Morris at the Helm
Conductor Greg Morris, Director of Music at St Margaret’s Church, also leads performances at the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Houses of Parliament. He founded the St Margaret’s Choristers — the Abbey’s first girl choristers to participate in its centuries-old choral tradition. Beyond Westminster, Morris directs the Collegium Musicum of London and Bar Choral Society, specializing in music from the medieval to the contemporary, and collaborating with world-class soloists and period instrumentalists.
