Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike known by many as MNEK debuted his new album “Language” this past September and after the success of that, went quickly into his first tour where he stopped in San Francisco, Toronto and Chicago’s very own Lincoln Hall, this past Monday on February 25th. His openers included Raja Kumari, a songwriter and rapper who has worked with many artists such as Gwen Stefani and Fall Out Boy. Artist Tayla Parx was the second opener, an Pop and R&B artist who can be credited for writing hits for Ariana Grande, BTS and Nicki Minaj.
After the opening acts, people seemed ready to enjoy MNEK and his voice. He started off with his first song, “Correct” which helped me get a sense of his smooth and powerful vocals. During the concert, he also played many hits, including “The Rhythm”, “Every Little Word”, “Paradise”, “Honeymoon Phaze” and “Free”. He did different covers such as “Ready for Your Love”, originally by Gorden City. The crowd loved the versatility in his voice, his ability to move from different pop songs, R&B songs, with a smooth voice that also was able to get the crowd excited throughout the concert. MNEK has a unique gift in being able to engage his audience and bring them with him as he goes through each song, some that cover his experiences in the past and some that are just upbeat and fun. One of the best moments of the night was when he sang an acoustic cover of “At Night(I Think about You)” was such a sweet an beautiful moment between him and the crowd. It was soft, and sweet many people holding their significant others and swaying back and forth.
MNEK is such a versatile artist that people with many different music tastes can appreciate his vulnerability, soulfulness in his voice and his ability to connect with fans. He is able to truly be himself on stage and that makes him so much more enjoyable to watch. I encourage anyone who is able to see him in the future to see him, it will be an amazing experience.
