A Symphony with Deep Roots

The SEK Symphony has been a cultural cornerstone since its founding in 1915 by Walter McCray, namesake of the university’s music building. Today, the orchestra continues its mission of enriching Southeast Kansas with high-level music-making. It is comprised of students, faculty, and community members, creating a unique ensemble that reflects both professional artistry and local pride.

With more than a century of history, the symphony remains committed to bringing four to five major performances each academic year, ensuring that music is woven into the fabric of Pittsburg’s cultural life.

The 2025–26 season of the SEK Symphony promises not only to celebrate the universal language of dance but also to highlight the vibrancy of Southeast Kansas’s music community. From classical favorites to new collaborations, this season invites everyone to join in the celebration of movement, culture, and community.
