Siouxland Winter Weather: Morning Snow May Slow Travel Until Midday Saturday

Sioux Falls, SD – A quick-moving winter system is expected to bring light to moderate snowfall across southeast South Dakota and northwest Iowa early Saturday morning, creating slippery roads and reduced visibility, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.

Forecast Overview

Snow is forecast to begin around 5 a.m. Saturday and taper off by midday, with most areas seeing 1–2 inches of accumulation. However, localized totals up to 4 inches are possible, especially in a corridor stretching from Sioux Falls to Sioux City.

The winter weather advisory covers Minnehaha, Lincoln, and Yankton counties in South Dakota and Lyon, Sioux, and Plymouth counties in Iowa.

Travel Impacts

Drivers should prepare for slick and snow-covered roads, particularly along Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 75, where visibility may drop during heavier snow bursts. Morning commuters are advised to reduce speed, allow extra braking distance, and check 511 travel updates before heading out.

“Even a small amount of snow can make travel hazardous when temperatures are near freezing,” officials warned.

Temperatures will hover near 32°F through the morning hours, allowing snow to stick to untreated surfaces and elevated roadways.

Afternoon Outlook

Snow is expected to end by noon, followed by cloudy but calmer conditions through the afternoon. However, icy patches may linger into the evening as roads remain cold and moisture refreezes.

Forecasters say drier weather will return Sunday, but another cold front early next week could bring additional flurries and a reinforcing shot of winter air.
