Strong Winds Sweep Central Wyoming as Riverton Tracks 12-Inch Mountain Snowfall Risk Through the Weekend

RIVERTON, WYOMING — Dawn has broken crisp and clear across central Wyoming, but a new December storm is already gathering to the west. Wind gusts between 35 and 50 mph are racing across ridgelines this morning, kicking up veils of blowing snow along I-80 and rattling signs across exposed basins. Skies will stay mostly sunny through midday, but forecasters warn the calm will not last long.

Snow Spreads East Friday Evening With Hazardous Mountain Travel Likely

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Riverton expect conditions to worsen by Friday evening, with snow showers spreading eastward from the Yellowstone and Wind River regions. Mountain passes are likely to see the biggest impact, including:

  • Teton Pass
  • Togwotee Pass
  • South Pass

Travelers across these high-elevation routes should plan for slick road conditions, rapidly changing visibility, and periods of heavy snow.

The Jackson and Star Valleys may see 8–12 inches of accumulation through Saturday night, while central basins — including Riverton — will likely see only a dusting to an inch.

Winds Remain Strong Today, Easing Gradually Into Saturday Morning

Strong winds will continue through today before slowly easing by early Saturday. While conditions improve, patches of fog may form across Yellowstone and upper valleys, occasionally reducing visibility during early travel hours.

Temperatures will rebound into the low 40s this weekend under mostly sunny skies, offering a short break from the storm.

Next System Could Bring Rain–Snow Mix Early Next Week

The reprieve is brief. Meteorologists are tracking another incoming system early next week, one that could bring a rain–snow mix across much of the state. This next round may produce new travel delays, particularly if temperatures hover near freezing during morning and evening commutes.

Residents and travelers across central and western Wyoming should stay alert for updated forecasts as the winter pattern remains active.
