Chicago’s Susie Blue duets with UK Singer and Songwriter Dominic Halpin
Halpin and Miles just released a new video together – long distance – crooning a jazzy/country duet of “So Sad” by the Everly Brothers… and it sounds like it’s been plucked from retro radio, joyously lilting and at once vintage and contemporary. His rich baritone and her smoky alto swirl around together like smooth scotch on the rocks.
Miles leads Chicago’s Western Swing band Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas, but spent 20 years working as a Jazz vocalist with Chicago greats Von Freeman, Johnny Frigo and Willie Pickens. Halpin, who leads his band The Honey Bees also has a diverse musical penchant and is best known for his Retro Country recordings and performances, but has built his style on a foundation of Swing and Jazz inspired by Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra. In comparison Miles has been labeled a combination of Patsy Cline and Billie Holiday by DownBeat magazine … so the two have a lot in common.
“I was thrilled when Dominic asked me to duet with him,” Miles said ” because I have been a fan for a while now. It’s not often that I get to sing with such a talented musician, arranger and crooner, who loves to pitch the woo but can also deliver authentic retro twang. He has a rich tone that reminds you of Mel Torme but the driving vocal sensibilities of Elvis.”
Halpin’s music has been featured in several movies, including “Heist” starring Robert DeNiro and he has worked with industry greats like Simon Cowell. Miles, who just released her second album of authentic Western Swing “Bye Bye Blues” with harmonica maestro Howard Levy, is preparing to duet with Halpin on her third release “Blue Train” which is due out in Fall 2020. They will harmonize together on a classic ballad by Carl Perkins “Forever Yours”, accompanied by Howard Levy and other great Chicago jazzers like guitarist Neal Alger.
