The Four Best DJs from Canada

Some fantastic DJs have emerged on the Canadian electronic dance music scene in recent years, such as Floetic, Nocturnal, and Marquez The DJ. But whether they can breakthrough as much as the following DJs from Canada remains to be seen. Here are the four who are arguably the best DJs Canada has ever produced.

Excision

Known for his dark and heavy bass sounds that combine metal and hip-hop vibes, Excision is a drum and bass, dubstep, trap, and breakbeat producer and DJ. Born in the British Columbia city of Kelowna in 1986, Jeff Abel came to prominence with his first release, Warning, in 2007. Excision founded his own record labels, Subsidia Records and Rottun Recordings, and even began his own music festival, Lost Lands.

If you get the chance to see Excision live, you will be blown away by his massive visual productions as much as his tunes. In the meantime, you can listen to exceptional albums like his 2011 debut X Rated and his 2018 release Apex. You could even play the fantastic DJ Wild slot game, which is available at an online casino in Canada, while you do so.

Rezz

The greatest female DJ from Canada to emerge in the twenty-first century has to be Rezz. The Persian-Ukrainian moved to Niagara Falls at a young age. While attending high school, she worked at the Hard Rock Café in the Ontario city. Isabelle Rezazadeh began DJing when she was sixteen years old. In 2016, a year after releasing her debut EP Insurrection, Rezz was signed to Deadmau5’s record label Mau5trap. Her glorious first album, Mass manipulation, came out in 2017 and the follow-up Certain Kind of Magic was released the following year. Mass Manipulation was the winner of the Juno Awards’ Electronic Album of the Year.

Deadmau5

Named after a dead mouse that he found in his computer, Deadmau5, whose real name is Joel Thomas Zimmerman, hails from Niagara Falls in Ontario. The electronic DJ, producer, and musician is most well-known for his progressive house music, but he also produces other electronic music genres, including house, which he creates under the pseudonym of Testpilot. Notable for being a masked artist, Zimmerman established his own record label, called Mau5trap, in 2007.

Over the years, he has worked with admired artists like Rob Swire, Sofia Toufa, Wolfgang Gartner, and Steve Duda. Deadmau5’s first album, Get Scraped, came out in 2005, and his latest, W:/2016Album/, was released in 2016, which featured the singles Snowcone and Let Go, featuring Grabbitz. Since emerging on the scene, Deadmau5 has gone on to receive six Grammy Award nominations for his work.

A-Trak

Rolling Stone magazine named him one of the 50 Most Important People in Electronic Dance Music and he has appeared on the covers of Complex and Billboard magazines, which should show you just how respected and beloved A-Trak is. Born in Montreal in 1982, Alain Macklovitch began his interest in music at around the age of ten when he listened to hip hop artists like Cypress Hill and Beastie Boys. He became inspired to experiment with his own sounds by scratching records on his parents’ turntable.

At only the age of fifteen, A-Trak got his first big break when he won the DMC World DJ Championship in 1997. He was the youngest ever winner of the competition, and also the first Canadian to win. By the late 2000s, A-Trak had become a highly-respected international club DJ and remix artist. His many credits include being the original tour DJ for Kanye West and receiving a Grammy Award nomination for the song Barbra Streisand, which A-Trak created with Armand Van Helden under the name of Duck Sauce. If you have not yet checked out A-Trak’s vast body of work, it is about time you did.
