By Zoe Blakeman
The show jumped right into heavy guitar riffs and thundering drums, which immediately set the tone. Wallice’s strong voice cut through the air, commanding everyone’s attention, as she opened with her newest release, “Disappear.” Her stage presence was undeniable as she effortlessly moved around, jumping and engaging with the audience. The energy in the room was electrifying, and it was clear that Wallice had the crowd in the palm of her hand. At the end of the song, she expressed her gratitude and announced the upcoming release of her new EP, adding to the excitement of the night.
Wallice’s debut song, “Punching Bag,” ignited the audience with its infectious energy. Despite its mellow nature, the song mesmerized the crowd, with Wallice’s soaring high notes weaving through the audience, captivating us with her emotional yet playful lyrics. As the song progressed, she unleashed her cherry red electric guitar, eliciting an exhilarated response from the audience. Each chord was struck with a sharp intensity, with the stage lights reflecting off the guitar, enveloping her in an ethereal glow.
Her fifth song, “Break my heart,” changed the mood as it began with heavy, intense drumming. The crowd erupted into motion as a rapid-fire guitar riff echoed through the venue, prompting Wallice to gesture for everyone to join her in jumping and dancing. The stage burst into a vibrant display of red lights, perfectly synchronized with the thunderous impact of the drums. The emotional intensity peaked when she got on her hands and knees and screamed, “Break my heart!”
“Rich Wallice,” and “John Wayne,” brought a deeper rock vibe to the room. Resonating with fierce bass notes, the entire venue quaked from its foundation. Wallice locked eyes with each audience member, shattering the barrier that separated fan from band member. She commanded attention as she flawlessly executed the demanding high-pitched notes while simultaneously compelling the crowd to dance with her.
She continuously showcased her truly remarkable vocal range, encompassing both the highest and lowest notes with flawless precision, with no signs of strain or wavering in her voice. While Wallice is primarily recognized as an indie-pop artist, her versatility shone through as she seamlessly incorporated powerful elements of heavy rock and hints of punk into her music.
Another new song, “Mr. Big Shot,” also the title of her soon-to-be-released EP, grabbed the audience’s attention. A slower, more melodic guitar opening changed the mood to a delicate bedroom pop ambiance, evoking a softer, more intimate atmosphere. Her long brown hair glistened in the rose gold lights falling upon her shoulders as she sang jaw-dropping notes that reached unbelievable heights. This song offered a new sense of maturity in her new music, captivating the audience who eagerly embraced the new direction. While her lyrics resonate with her generation, her music still retains a sense of individuality and distinctiveness that not all artists seem to find.
“Why Do You Love Me?” is an unreleased song, that emanated a distinctive aura, setting it apart from the rest of the album. It commenced with a subtle bass line that provoked a profound guitar riff accompanied by mesmerizing vocals. There was one moment in the middle of the song where all instruments stopped, and only Wallice’s voice could be heard echoing throughout the venue, screaming for attention. It was like the calm in the eye of the storm, except she was the storm.
Following that was her performance of “Japan,” a deeply personal song delving into her family, heritage, and the quest to define home and its significance. While consistently impressing the audience with her vocal range, it was during this particular song that her singing truly stood out. She effortlessly reached and held high notes for extended durations, leaving the crowd entranced, filled with awe, and moved to their core. Her facial expressions expressed more vulnerability in this song than with others; it was a song literally close to home.
Wallice’s final song, “Funeral,” held a special place in her heart as she stated it was her favorite. The instant the drumsticks struck the drums, a surge of electric energy coursed through the venue, igniting a collective spark within everyone. The atmosphere became a celebration, as people jumped, danced, and beamed with smiles, fostering a strong sense of connection among all.
On top of the overwhelming joy that filled the room, a disco ball descended from the ceiling and illuminated the space, casting a radiant glow that mirrored the brilliance exuded by Wallice herself. Everyone in the room was glistening as much as Wallice had been. The venue had a fuse that needed to be lit by an artist like Wallice, and she did just that.
