Washington Coast Under Flood Warning as 25-Foot Waves and Storm Surge Threaten Coastal Communities

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued urgent alerts for coastal flooding and dangerously high surf along Washington’s northern coast, warning that conditions could worsen through Thursday night as a powerful Pacific storm system pushes inland.

Officials say waves up to 25 feet and water levels two to three feet above ground level could lead to flooded roadways, property damage, and hazardous beach conditions across coastal communities such as Westport, La Push, and Grays Harbor County.

High Surf and Flood Warnings in Effect

According to the NWS Seattle office, a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday, while a High Surf Advisory remains active from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

“The combination of high surf and elevated tides may cause widespread flooding of roads, beaches, and nearby structures,” NWS forecasters warned.

Meteorologists explained that the event is being driven by a deep low-pressure Pacific storm, generating strong onshore winds and storm surge along the Washington coast. The peak flooding risk is expected Thursday afternoon, when high tide coincides with powerful wind gusts and high surf.

Communities Prepare for Dangerous Conditions

Local officials say the most vulnerable coastal zones could experience erosion, home inundation, and debris movement during the height of the storm. The Grays Harbor Emergency Management Department cautioned that water levels may reach or exceed those seen during earlier flood events this week.

“We’re expecting heavy surf and dangerous conditions across beaches,” said a Grays Harbor County emergency official. “We’re asking everyone to stay off the coast and let first responders do their work safely.”

Residents have already begun preparing for potential flooding, with businesses in Westport and Ocean Shores securing property and marinas advising boat owners to reinforce moorings and avoid launching until conditions improve.

Safety Recommendations for Residents

Emergency officials urge residents in coastal and low-lying areas to take precautions before tides rise and winds strengthen. Recommended safety measures include:

  • Move vehicles and valuables to higher ground.
  • Avoid driving or walking through floodwaters.
  • Stay off driftwood, jetties, and rocks near the surf zone.
  • Follow evacuation alerts from local authorities if issued.

The NWS warned that sneaker waves can appear suddenly and sweep people into the ocean, even when conditions appear calm.

Storm History and Ongoing Impacts

This week’s event follows a series of Pacific storms that have battered the Washington coast in recent days, causing beach erosion, power outages, and minor flooding. Meteorologists note that waves exceeding 20 to 25 feet are among the highest recorded so far this season, and the pattern may continue into the weekend, bringing additional rounds of heavy surf.

Flooding and high surf hazards are expected to subside by Friday morning, though cleanup and repair efforts may extend through the weekend in hard-hit areas.
