Winter Storm Watch Warns Central and Western Massachusetts Could See Over 6 Inches of Snow by Late Tuesday
WORCESTER, MA — Central and Western Massachusetts are bracing for their first major winter storm of the season as the National Weather Service issues a Winter Storm Watch from Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night, warning that more than 6 inches of snow could fall across a wide portion of the state.
Heaviest Snow Targeting Worcester, Springfield, Greenfield, and Lowell
Forecasters say snow will begin early Tuesday, quickly intensifying during the morning commute. By midday, much of the region — including Worcester, Springfield, Greenfield, Lowell, and surrounding towns — may see snowfall rates up to one inch per hour, particularly in higher elevations like the Worcester Hills and Berkshires.
Roads along major arteries — I-90, I-91, and Route 2 — are expected to deteriorate rapidly as visibility drops and snow accumulates.
Hazardous Travel Likely Through Evening Commute
The timing of the storm is poised to create significant travel disruptions both Tuesday morning and Tuesday evening. Wet, heavy snow may lead to:
- Difficult and slow travel
- Rapidly snow-covered roads
- Reduced visibility
- Scattered power outages from weighed-down branches and wires
Motorists are urged to prepare emergency kits, allow extra time, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall.
Snow Tapers Late Tuesday, but Icy Roads Remain a Concern
Snow is forecast to taper late Tuesday night, yet temperatures will stay below freezing into Wednesday morning. That means icy patches and refreezing could continue to cause travel hazards well after snowfall stops.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and storm alerts throughout the day as track and totals may shift.
