69-Year-Old Woman Survives Black Bear Attack in Western Wisconsin

BARRON COUNTY, WISCONSIN — A 69-year-old woman is recovering after being attacked by a black bear near the Town of Comstock on Saturday afternoon, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Officials said the incident occurred around 2 p.m., when the woman was attacked outdoors. Despite her injuries, she managed to call 911 and was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in stable condition.
Details From the Scene
Responding officers from Barron County and the City of Cumberland, along with DNR wardens and staff from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), arrived at the scene shortly after the attack.
Authorities said they located a bear cub in a tree nearby, indicating the incident involved a sow and her cub.
Search for the Bear
Officials attempted to track the bear with a trained bear hound dog, but efforts to capture the animal were unsuccessful. The DNR confirmed that attempts are ongoing, though it remains unclear what provoked the attack.
Wildlife officials have urged residents in the area to remain vigilant and to report any bear sightings to authorities while the search continues.
Community Safety and Recovery
The DNR emphasized that while black bear attacks are rare in Wisconsin, protective mother bears can become aggressive if they perceive a threat to their cubs.
The woman, whose name has not been released, is expected to make a recovery. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further incidents in the area.
