NJ Teen Killed in South Trenton Shooting After Gunfire Alert Notifies Police

TRENTON, New Jersey — A 19-year-old Trenton resident was killed early Friday after a gunfire detection system alerted police to a shooting in the city’s South Trenton neighborhood, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

How Police Found the Victim

Authorities said officers responded to a 12:39 a.m. alert from the city’s gunfire-detection system in the 200 block of Centre Street. When they arrived, they discovered the victim, identified as Tommy Febles, who had been shot in the head.

Febles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Underway

The Mercer County Homicide Task Force is handling the case, led by Sgt. Will Jett and Detective Zach Ortman. No arrests have been made, and investigators have not yet released details on potential suspects or motives.

Officials urged anyone with information to call investigators at 609-331-5010 or 609-273-2451. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the prosecutor’s website.

Technology at Work

The case highlights the role of gunfire detection technology in urban policing. Systems like the one used in Trenton provide real-time alerts to police when gunshots are detected, allowing officers to respond faster to possible shootings.

In this incident, the system enabled law enforcement to locate the scene quickly, though tragically it was too late to save the victim.

Community Response

South Trenton residents expressed concern over continued violence in their neighborhoods, while also praising the technology for helping police respond rapidly. Local leaders say this tragedy underscores the need for expanded community safety programs alongside law enforcement technology.

The killing of Tommy Febles remains under investigation. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any details that might help solve the case.
