Southeast North Carolina Weather Alert: Evening High Tides Bring Flood Risk Along Cape Fear River Into Next Week

WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA – Residents along the lower Cape Fear River should brace for minor flooding during evening high tides through the coming week, with the most immediate impacts expected Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington .
Evening Flooding Risk
Forecasters warn that each evening tide will bring a two- to three-hour flood window, stretching from Wilmington southward, where low-lying neighborhoods and riverfront roads face the highest risk.
Drivers along River Road and near downtown Wilmington should prepare for possible standing water during evening commutes, especially after dark when water depths can be difficult to judge.
Thunderstorms Add to Concerns
Scattered thunderstorms are expected Sunday through Tuesday, with rainfall totals of up to a half inch in some areas, adding to already elevated river levels. The strongest storms may strike in the late afternoon, bringing gusty winds, heavy downpours, and localized power outages.
“When water is covering the roadway, especially at night, it’s nearly impossible to tell how deep it is. We encourage residents to turn around, don’t drown,” local emergency managers cautioned.
