Kentucky State Police Opens Applications for New Cadet Class

BOWLING GREEN, KY — The Kentucky State Police (KSP) has officially opened applications for its next cadet class, giving recruits the opportunity to join one of the state’s most vital law enforcement agencies.

Recruitment Drive Underway

Lieutenant Charles Hedgespeth of the Recruitment Branch said the KSP plays a critical role in rural communities without local police coverage.

“We supplement each other… we have a really good working relationship with local city departments and the sheriff’s department, so it works,” Hedgespeth explained.

Applicants must first pass a fitness test, written exam, oral board interview, background investigation, and polygraph before being admitted into the academy.

Training and Academy Structure

The standard cadet academy lasts 24 weeks, where candidates receive comprehensive law enforcement training.

However, those with at least three years of law enforcement experience may qualify for the accelerated academy, which runs 14 weeks. Accelerated candidates are also guaranteed the post of their choice upon graduation.

After completing training, all troopers are required to work on patrol for three years before becoming eligible for one of more than 20 specialty branches, such as:

  • Auto theft
  • Special response team
  • Electronic crimes unit
  • And more

Requirements and Benefits

To qualify, candidates must:

  • Be 21 years old by graduation
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Meet at least one of the following:
    • Three years of verified work experience
    • 60 college credit hours
    • Two years of military service
    • Two years of law enforcement experience

Hedgespeth highlighted the personal rewards of the career:

“The greatest reward of this job is helping people in your communities, and being a Kentucky State Trooper gives you the ability to do that in whatever fashion you might want.”

The program is expected to be highly competitive this year, with starting salaries at $69,500.

Application Deadline

Applications for the cadet class are open now and will close in early December. The academy begins on May 17, 2026.
