Two Dead, One Injured in Overnight Shooting in Independence, Kentucky

INDEPENDENCE, KY — A late-night shooting in Independence turned deadly as police confirmed two people are dead, including the suspect, and one person is injured after gunfire erupted Sunday night into early Monday morning.
Police Called to Regal Drive
According to Independence Police, officers were dispatched to the Regal Drive area near Taylor Mill Road around 11:30 p.m. Sunday after multiple reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found one man with injuries, who was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials have not released his current condition.
SWAT, Drones, and K-9 Units Deployed
While investigating the initial scene, officers heard additional gunfire coming from the heavily wooded area surrounding the neighborhood.
Police immediately called in SWAT, K-9 units, and drones to track potential suspects or victims. The wooded terrain between Regal Drive and Jimae Avenue became the focus of the search.
Between 1:20 and 1:30 a.m. Monday, drones detected heat signatures in the woods. Officers moved in and discovered a man and a woman dead from gunshot wounds.
Authorities believe the man, identified as the suspect, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Shelter-in-Place Order Lifted
During the response, police issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby neighborhoods due to the danger posed by the active shooter situation. That order has since been lifted.
Captain Mike Brock of the Independence Police Department assured residents that the situation is no longer a threat:
“The area is safe. This scene affected not only the area of Regal Ridge but several neighboring neighborhoods. There was a lot of police traffic throughout the entire area, but the scene is clear. The area is safe now, and there’s probably going to be a lot of police in the area for the time being.”
Two Separate Crime Scenes
Police confirmed they are working two active crime scenes:
- The initial scene on Regal Drive, where the first injured man was located.
- A secondary wooded scene stretching toward Jimae Avenue, where the man and woman were found dead.
The investigation lasted several hours, from the first gunfire around 11:30 p.m. until officers secured the second scene by about 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or the suspect. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown as detectives continue processing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Police said more information will be released as the investigation develops.
This tragic incident underscores the devastating impact of gun violence in Kentucky communities and the intense overnight police operations required to bring such situations under control.
