Wisconsin Sheriff Warns Residents of Police Impersonation Phone Scam

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Wis. – Authorities are warning residents about a sophisticated phone scam that surfaced this week, with multiple community members reporting calls from someone pretending to be a sheriff’s deputy. At least six residents have been targeted so far.

Scam Tactics Reported

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, the scammer allegedly told victims they owed money for a citation or outstanding warrant and pressured them to pay immediately. To make the scheme sound more convincing, the caller even referenced a supposed “meeting at the Sheriff’s Office” while directing victims on how to deposit money at local banks.

Officials described the attempts as “very sophisticated”, but fortunately, the targeted residents became suspicious and contacted the Sheriff’s Office before sending any funds.

Sheriff’s Office Issues Guidance

Authorities stressed that the Sheriff’s Office does not call residents to demand payment for fines, warrants, or citations. Instead, residents should hang up immediately and verify any claims directly with law enforcement.

“We’re thankful that these residents trusted their instincts and came to us before losing money,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its public warning.

Protecting the Community

Officials are urging residents to share the warning with family members and friends, particularly seniors, who are often primary targets in phone scams.

Anyone who has received a similar call or who may have already sent money is encouraged to file a report with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office to assist in the ongoing investigation.

This incident highlights the importance of community awareness in preventing fraud. By staying alert and questioning suspicious calls, residents can help protect themselves and others from falling victim to scams. For more safety updates and local alerts, follow ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
