Matthews Man Arrested After Attacking Wife and Trapping 4 Kids Inside Home; Police Use Flashbang to End Standoff

MATTHEWS, North Carolina — A domestic dispute escalated into a tense standoff Thursday when a 44-year-old man allegedly assaulted his wife and trapped their four children inside their home, forcing police to use a flashbang device to bring the situation under control.
The suspect, identified as Tyrone Jenkins, faces multiple charges, including four felony counts of false imprisonment, four counts of child abuse, domestic violence, and resisting a public officer.
Disturbance on Chambers Drive
According to the Matthews Police Department, officers arrived around 4:30 p.m. at a residence on the 1700 block of Chambers Drive after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance.
They found a woman outside with visible injuries who told officers her husband had assaulted her and had been holding her against her will. Police soon learned Jenkins was inside with their four children and had two outstanding felony arrest warrants.
Standoff and Negotiations
Police said Jenkins briefly stepped outside but then retreated back inside and locked the door. Backup was called, including a special response team, and a perimeter was quickly established.
A police negotiator managed to convince Jenkins to release the children, who were safely reunited with their mother. However, Jenkins continued to refuse surrender even as officers entered the residence.
Flashbang Deployment and Arrest
Due to his continued resistance, police deployed a non-lethal flashbang device, creating a loud blast and bright flash that disoriented Jenkins long enough for officers to move in. He immediately surrendered and was taken into custody.
No injuries were reported during the incident. Jenkins was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail, where he made his first court appearance Friday. Records show his next court date is January 22, 2026.
The swift police response ensured the safety of the children and prevented further violence. For ongoing coverage of crime and public safety across North Carolina, stay connected with ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
