East St. Louis Man Charged With First-Degree Murder After Fatal Apartment Stabbing

EAST ST. LOUIS, Illinois — A 42-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was fatally stabbed inside her apartment last week, according to the Illinois State Police (ISP).
The suspect, Jamal L. Wilson, was arrested following an investigation into the September 27 stabbing on the 3200 block of State Street.
Victim Identified as Shanika S. Barbee
When officers and emergency responders arrived at the apartment, they found 38-year-old Shanika S. Barbee, also of East St. Louis, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Emergency medical services pronounced Barbee dead at the scene, ISP confirmed.
Murder Charge Filed After Investigation
Over the following days, ISP Special Agents worked alongside the East St. Louis Police Department to gather evidence and follow leads.
By September 29, investigators presented their findings to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office, which filed a charge of first-degree murder against Wilson.
Suspect Remains in Custody
Wilson is currently being held in custody pending further court proceedings. Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led to the fatal stabbing, and the investigation is ongoing.
