Nicholasville Police: Man Who Shot Two People, Killing One, Will Not Face Immediate Charges

NICHOLASVILLE, Kentucky — Police say a 24-year-old Nicholasville man will not face immediate criminal charges after a Thursday morning shooting at an apartment complex left one man dead and a woman injured.

Shooting on Edgewood Drive

According to the Nicholasville Police Department, officers responded around 9:30 a.m. Thursday to an apartment building on Edgewood Drive, where they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Investigators identified the deceased victim as James Milton, 31, who had been shot at least twice in the chest, and his mother, Samantha Milton, 54, who sustained a gunshot wound to her arm. Both were transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where James Milton was later pronounced dead. Samantha Milton was treated and released.

Shooter Cooperated With Police

Police identified the shooter as Raekwon Scott, 24, who remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the confrontation began after Milton saw his girlfriend enter Scott’s apartment. According to police, Milton attempted to break down the door while armed with a handgun, and Scott fired in response.

Investigators believe Milton’s mother was inadvertently struck during the exchange.

Dispute Followed Prior Argument

Police said the fatal encounter followed a “prolonged verbal dispute” the previous night between Milton and his girlfriend. Witnesses told detectives that tensions had escalated between the couple before the shooting occurred.

According to police, both men lived in the same apartment building, and the shooting took place as Milton tried to confront his girlfriend after she entered Scott’s unit.

An autopsy on Milton’s body was conducted at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Fayette County on Friday to confirm the cause and trajectory of the gunshot wounds.

No Immediate Charges Filed

In a statement Friday, the Nicholasville Police Department said interviews and a search of Scott’s apartment supported his claim that he fired in self-defense.

“An analysis of evidence and continued consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office will ultimately determine culpability,” the department said in a written release.

As of Friday afternoon, Scott had not been charged, though police confirmed the investigation remains active as prosecutors review forensic evidence and witness statements.

The Edgewood Drive shooting has left the Nicholasville community grappling with another act of gun violence while police continue to investigate whether the case meets the criteria for justified self-defense. For ongoing updates on Kentucky crime and justice news, follow ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
