South Carolina Weather Alert: Thick Fog Blankets Upstate as Rain and Cooler Air Move In Tonight

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA — A foggy, gray morning greeted drivers across the Upstate and western North Carolina on Tuesday, with dense fog cutting visibility in several areas and prompting warnings from the U.S. National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg.
Forecasters say the fog will lift by late morning, bringing partly sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures this afternoon before a cold front sweeps in tonight, bringing rain and cooler air to much of the region.
Fog Advisory and Travel Safety
Drivers are being urged to use caution during their morning commute, especially along rural roads and mountain passes, where visibility may drop to near zero in spots.
“Motorists should slow down, allow extra travel time, and use low-beam headlights until fog dissipates,” weather officials advised.
The fog is expected to gradually lift between 9 and 10 a.m., giving way to sunny breaks across Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson.
Temperatures will rise into the upper 70s and low 80s by this afternoon — one of the final warm spells before more autumn-like air settles in later this week.
Rain Returns Tonight as Cold Front Approaches
Meteorologists say scattered showers could pop up through the day, but a more widespread round of rain will arrive tonight into Wednesday, as a cold front moves east from the Appalachians.
This front will deliver cooler temperatures, dropping highs into the 60s and 70s by midweek and overnight lows into the 50s.
Rain chances will remain elevated through Wednesday morning before tapering off by midday. Drier and cooler conditions are expected to follow for the rest of the week, with sunny skies returning Thursday and Friday.
Early October Transition to Fall Conditions
Forecasters noted that this will likely be one of the final warm stretches of early October. Once the cold front passes, South Carolina residents can expect lower humidity, crisp mornings, and mild afternoons heading into the weekend.
Travelers across the Carolinas and northeast Georgia should monitor updated forecasts, as fog and overnight rain could still impact visibility and travel safety through early Wednesday.
