Arizona Man Sentenced After Brutally Beating Ex-Girlfriend in Front of Her Daughter, Leaving Her With Multiple Brain Bleeds

AVONDALE, ARIZONA – A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly nine years in prison after brutally beating his ex-girlfriend in front of her daughter, leaving the woman with multiple brain bleeds and a fractured skull, according to prosecutors.
“Lying in a Pool of Blood”
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced that Brandon Ramos Valenzuela will serve 8¾ years in prison followed by lifetime supervised probation for the violent October 2023 assault, which authorities described as “nearly a deadly situation.”
Valenzuela pleaded guilty in August 2025 to aggravated assault with serious physical injury and child abuse, both classified as domestic violence offenses.
When officers arrived at the home near Van Buren Street and Dysart Road in Avondale, they discovered the woman “lying in a pool of blood” with deep lacerations on her head and severe bruising across her face.
She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors treated her for a skull fracture and several brain bleeds.
Child’s Courageous Escape
According to investigators, the victim’s 11-year-old daughter witnessed the attack and risked her life to get help.
The child told police she woke up to Valenzuela “yelling at her mom” and then saw him beating her violently. When the girl tried to intervene, he covered her face, making it hard for her to breathe.
The child managed to break free, ran out of the house, and called 911, alerting authorities to the assault.
“This 11-year-old showed incredible courage during what could easily have been a deadly situation,” said Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “Even one act of domestic violence is one too many.”
Prosecutors Condemn Domestic Violence
Mitchell emphasized that her office remains committed to protecting survivors and holding abusers accountable, especially during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“As prosecutors, we carry the responsibility to stand up for those who can’t — and to make it clear that abuse has no place in our communities, ever,” she said.
The victim continues to recover from her injuries, while Valenzuela remains in custody serving his sentence.
