New DNA Twist Rocks Amber Spradlin Murder Case — Blood Found on Multiple Items Forces Trial Delay

PRESTONSBURG, KENTUCKY — The upcoming murder trial in the death of 38-year-old Amber Spradlin is being delayed after new evidence surfaced, according to officials with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Attorney Mark Wohlander, representing the Spradlin family, announced that the Kentucky State Police crime lab recently found presumptive blood evidence on multiple items, prompting prosecutors to request additional DNA testing. The process could take several months to complete.

Prosecutors Request More Time for Testing and Expert Review

Commonwealth Attorney Brent Turner confirmed that his office will file a motion to continue the trial, saying the new DNA results are critical and could significantly impact courtroom strategy.

“This type of delay is not unusual for a murder case of this magnitude,” prosecutors said, noting that preparing homicide cases for trial can often take up to three years.

Officials also said the court may hold a Daubert hearing to determine whether expert testimony related to the forensic evidence is admissible. Prosecutors plan to call multiple expert witnesses, including crime lab specialists and independent forensic experts, once testing is complete.

Family Supports Delay for Stronger Case

Amber Spradlin’s family expressed full support for the decision, emphasizing the need to build the strongest possible case.

“Amber deserves justice that’s backed by the truth and the science,” Wohlander said. “This delay gives the prosecution time to make sure nothing is overlooked.”

The court is expected to set a new trial date once the motion to continue is reviewed.
