Wisconsin Assistant Track Coach Arrested Over Alleged Relationship With Student-Athlete

GREENFIELD, WISCONSIN — A 23-year-old assistant track coach from the Greenfield School District has been arrested for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a student-athlete, authorities confirmed this week.

The suspect, identified as Bennet Schmitz, was taken into custody on October 20 in Schofield, Wisconsin, following an investigation into incidents that reportedly occurred during the spring of 2024.

Coach Accused of Inappropriate Conduct With Student

According to officials, the Greenfield School District was alerted when the student disclosed concerns to a trusted staff member, who immediately reported it to school administrators. Police were then contacted, and an investigation was launched.

The district emphasized that Schmitz was not a licensed educator and did not hold a teaching position. He served solely as an assistant track coach during the 2022–23 and 2023–24 spring seasons.

“The district takes this situation with the utmost seriousness. Our primary focus remains on the safety and well-being of our students,” officials said in a statement.

The district also confirmed that Schmitz had passed a criminal background check prior to his employment and that only one student is believed to be involved in the case.

Felony Charges Filed Against Schmitz

Court records show Schmitz faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Child enticement – sexual contact
  • Sexual assault of a student by school staff
  • Child enticement – exposing genitals/pubic area/intimate parts

Schmitz is scheduled for his initial court appearance on October 28 at 1:15 p.m. If convicted, he could face several decades in prison.

School District Cooperating Fully With Police

The Greenfield Police Department and school officials are continuing to investigate the full scope of the alleged misconduct. The district has also reminded students and families that confidential counseling and reporting resources are available.

Authorities have not released further details about the student or the specific nature of the interactions.
