Wisconsin School Shooting Leaves Teacher and Student Dead, Six Others Injured

MADISON, WISCONSIN — A tragic school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison left two people dead — a teacher and a teenage student — and six others injured, including two students in critical condition, police said Monday.

Authorities confirmed that the suspected shooter, a 17-year-old female student, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound when officers arrived. Police say no responding officers fired their weapons.

“These are just the physical injuries we know about,” said Madison Police Chief Shon F. Barnes. “There will be other injuries that we have to face for a very, very long time.”

Timeline of the Tragedy

Police received reports of an active shooter at the school just before 11 a.m. Monday. When officers arrived, they discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds inside the building.

The Abundant Life Christian School, which serves about 420 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, was in its final week of classes before Christmas break.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, and investigators say the 17-year-old shooter illegally possessed the firearm, as minors under 18 generally cannot carry guns in Wisconsin.

Officials have not yet determined a motive for the attack.

“I don’t know why,” Barnes said. “And I feel like if we did know why, we could stop these things from happening.”

Community and National Reaction

In the wake of the tragedy, President Joe Biden renewed calls for universal background checks and national red flag laws, saying,

“We can never accept senseless violence that traumatizes children, their families, and tears entire communities apart.”

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers described the shooting as “unthinkable”, urging renewed focus on preventing targeted school violence.

“Targeted violence is preventable,” said Trish Kilpin, executive director of the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Office of School Safety. “When somebody conducts a school shooting, they don’t simply snap. They make a decision and start planning for violence.”

Ongoing Investigation and Broader Context

Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing, with detectives reviewing surveillance footage and student witness accounts.

This shooting joins a grim list of school tragedies across the U.S., including Newtown, Parkland, and Uvalde, reigniting debate over gun control laws and mental health intervention in youth communities.

According to KFF, firearms have been the leading cause of death among children in the U.S. since 2020 — a statistic that continues to alarm educators, parents, and lawmakers alike.
