Upper Michigan Weather: Wind Advisory Issued as 45 MPH Gusts Threaten Power Outages and Lakeshore Flooding

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN — The Upper Peninsula is bracing for powerful winds and rough conditions today as a Wind Advisory remains in effect through midnight, bringing gusts strong enough to cause power outages and lakeshore flooding along parts of Lake Superior.

The National Weather Service in Marquette reports southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph across northern Marquette County — particularly north of the Michigan–Ishpeming line and near open water.

Strong Winds Sweeping Across Lake Superior

By early Sunday morning, trees were swaying and waves crashed along the rocky shoreline, coating harbor walls in icy mist. The gray, fast-moving clouds signaled the region’s first real taste of November weather.

Officials warn that the strong winds could topple branches, blow unsecured objects, and disrupt travel — especially for high-profile vehicles along US-41 and M-28.

“We’re looking at a classic early-November setup — strong southwest winds over cold water creating dangerous conditions near the lake,” said forecasters at the National Weather Service Marquette office.

Lakeshore Flooding and Power Outages Possible

The persistent southwest flow is also raising water levels along the Lake Michigan side of the Upper Peninsula, increasing the risk of minor lakeshore flooding. Residents are urged to clear drains, secure outdoor furniture, and avoid standing near piers or jetties during the strongest gusts.

Utility crews are on standby as isolated power outages remain possible through the evening.

Calmer Weather Returns Monday, Showers Midweek

Conditions will ease by early Monday, with sunshine and calmer winds returning to the region. Temperatures are expected to hold in the upper 40s to low 50s early in the week before clouds and scattered showers arrive by Tuesday or Wednesday.

While snow isn’t yet in the forecast, meteorologists note that the developing La Niña pattern could bring stronger cold fronts and early snow by mid-November, setting the stage for the first winter weather headlines of the season.
