Kentucky Sheriff Accused of Groping Woman While in Uniform: Former Trimble County Lawman Arrested on Felony Charges

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A former Trimble County sheriff has been arrested and charged with first-degree sexual abuse after allegedly assaulting a woman while on duty and in uniform earlier this year, according to court records.

Charles Kelton, 53, turned himself in at the Oldham County Jail on Saturday, Nov. 1, after an arrest warrant was issued in connection with the alleged incident that took place on Feb. 21, 2025 inside the Trimble County Attorney’s Office.

Incident Occurred While Kelton Was in Uniform

Investigators say that while serving as sheriff, Kelton allegedly grabbed a woman’s hips and pulled her against him after she “physically and verbally rejected him.” The report states the incident occurred inside her office while Kelton was wearing his sheriff’s uniform.

Kelton reportedly admitted to his actions during questioning, according to the arrest warrant.

He has been charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, and official misconduct, which carries additional penalties due to the abuse of his authority while in office.

Released on Bond, Ordered to Home Incarceration

Following his surrender, Kelton was booked into the Oldham County Jail and later released on a $5,000 surety bond. He has been placed on home incarceration and ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim pending trial.

His next court appearance in Trimble County District Court is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 6.

Retirement Came Months After the Alleged Incident

Kelton retired as Trimble County Sheriff on July 31, 2025, several months after the alleged assault. The Kentucky State Police and county prosecutors are overseeing the case, which remains under active investigation.

The arrest marks another troubling case involving abuse of power by a public official, drawing attention to oversight practices within small-town law enforcement across Kentucky.

As the case unfolds, Trimble County residents await the court’s next steps and potential disciplinary action from state law enforcement agencies. For continued updates on Kentucky legal and public safety news, visit ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
