Kentucky Man Dies of Self-Inflicted Gunshot After Deputies Open Fire During Pursuit, Sheriff Says

NELSON COUNTY, KENTUCKY — A 37-year-old Bardstown man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a confrontation with deputies who had fired at him during a pursuit on Monday afternoon, according to Nelson County Sheriff Ramon Pineiroa.

Authorities identified the man as Terry Carney, who had earlier been reported to police by his father for allegedly firing a weapon in a threatening manner at his home.

911 Call Leads to Dangerous Pursuit

The incident began around 3:45 p.m., when Kentucky State Police (KSP) received a 911 call from Carney’s father. The caller reported that his son was armed and behaving erratically at a residence in Nelson County.

As deputies responded to the home, Carney fled the area in his truck. When officers attempted a traffic stop, Carney allegedly rammed a deputy’s cruiser, prompting one deputy to fire at the vehicle. A pursuit then ensued through rural roadways.

Exchange of Gunfire Ends in Tragedy

The chase ended along the 400 block of Woodlawn Road, where Carney drove off the road and exited his vehicle. According to state police, he fired multiple shots, prompting deputies to return fire. Moments later, Carney was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound that proved fatal.

Sheriff Pineiroa confirmed that five deputies were involved in the confrontation, though none were injured. Authorities emphasized that while deputies discharged their weapons, Carney’s death was ruled self-inflicted.

Investigation Underway

Kentucky State Police have taken over the investigation, standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in the state. An autopsy will be performed in Louisville to confirm the cause of death.

Officials said no law enforcement officers were hurt during the incident. As of Tuesday, the case remains open pending forensic results and internal review.
