Wisconsin Poker Game Turns Violent as Armed Intruder Opens Fire Inside Apartment Tied to Illegal Gambling, Police Say
WAUWATOSA, WISCONSIN – A late-night poker game inside an apartment already known to police for illegal gambling was violently interrupted when an armed intruder forced entry and opened fire, leaving several people injured and triggering a major investigation.
Wauwatosa Police say officers responded just after 1 a.m. on November 12 to the Reserve at Wauwatosa Apartments after multiple 911 callers reported gunshots and chaos inside the building.
Intruder Forced Through Patio Door Before Shots Were Fired
According to the initial police report, the suspect forced their way into the apartment through a first-floor patio, confronting a room full of people gathered around a poker game.
Moments later, multiple gunshots rang out.
Police say several individuals were hit, though all injuries were described as non-life-threatening. One person was hurt while trying to escape the apartment as the gunfire erupted.
First responders rushed all victims to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators: Apartment Known as Site for Illegal Gambling
As detectives combed the scene for evidence, they discovered that the apartment where the shooting occurred had a long-standing reputation for hosting illicit gambling nights, including poker games that drew numerous visitors.
Police say the illegal activity likely contributed to the motive behind the break-in, noting that early evidence points to the shooting being a targeted incident, not a random attack.
The suspect fled the scene immediately, and as of now, no arrests have been announced.
Police Stress Community Safety and Warn Against Illegal Gambling Houses
In their public statement, Wauwatosa Police issued a pointed reminder about the dangers these underground gatherings create.
The department said illegal gambling operations can “undermine the safety and sense of security” in the surrounding community—especially when large sums of cash attract criminal activity.
Investigators are now using surveillance footage, witness statements, and physical evidence to track down the shooter and determine the motive behind the violent intrusion.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Wauwatosa Police Investigative Division at (414) 471-8430.
