Nebraska Walmart Erupts in Flames After 20-Year-Old Sets Fire While Shoppers Were Inside, Police Say

NEBRASKA — A Nebraska Walmart packed with weekend shoppers and staff was thrown into chaos after authorities say a 20-year-old man deliberately started a fire inside the store — and admitted he took into account where people were standing when he ignited the flames.

Fire Breaks Out Just Before Noon, Forcing Immediate Evacuation

According to the York Police Department, the fire erupted just before noon on Sunday at the Walmart in York, Nebraska, about 50 miles west of Lincoln. As smoke began spreading through the building, 911 dispatchers informed officers that the suspected arsonist had already called in — allegedly saying he set the blaze himself.

Officers arrived minutes later, evacuated the store, and located the suspect near the dumpsters outside.

The man was identified as 20-year-old William Eckman, who officers say was taken into custody without incident.

Suspect Allegedly Confessed — and Knew Details Only Witnesses Could Know

During questioning, Eckman allegedly admitted to setting the fire intentionally and told investigators he was aware customers and employees were inside. Police say Eckman even claimed he considered where people were located inside the store as he set the blaze, indicating he knew the potential danger his actions posed.

Detectives also reported that Eckman described specific details about the fire that only someone who saw it firsthand could know, reinforcing investigators’ belief he was responsible.

Nearly $15,000 worth of merchandise was destroyed, not including structural damage to the store itself.

Store Reopens After Emergency Crews Extinguish Blaze

Fire crews quickly moved in to control the flames, and the store was temporarily shut down for cleanup and safety evaluation. Walmart reopened three days later on Wednesday, returning the location to normal operations.

Authorities urged the public to share any additional information regarding Eckman’s activities before or after the fire.

Eckman Faces Arson and Terroristic Threats Charges

Eckman was arrested and booked into the York County Jail on the following charges:

  • First-degree arson
  • Terroristic threats
  • Criminal mischief over $5,000

His bond was set at $2,500, and he made his first court appearance on Wednesday.

York police have not announced a motive, and no injuries were reported.
