Connecticut Inland Snow Threat Builds as Coastal Storm Targets I-84 Corridor Tuesday Morning

DANBURY, CONNECTICUT — A coastal storm tracking offshore could bring light snow and slippery early-morning travel to inland southwestern Connecticut on Tuesday, particularly along the I-84 corridor from Danbury to Waterbury. Forecasters warn that colder interior areas may see snow accumulate before warmer coastal air changes precipitation to rain.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall totals will range from a few tenths of an inch to 2 inches, depending on elevation and how long temperatures remain near freezing.

Light Snow Likely Overnight for Danbury, Waterbury, Inland Towns

Snow is expected to begin between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday, with the highest chances of early accumulation in inland areas where colder air is holding firm. Danbury, Waterbury, and surrounding communities could see coating-to-two-inch totals, especially on untreated roads, driveways, and elevated surfaces.

The greatest impacts will be during the Tuesday morning commute, when slick conditions may develop before the precipitation transitions to rain.

Coastal Fairfield County to See Mostly Rain With Brief Snow Mix

Lower-elevation and shoreline towns including Bridgeport, Norwalk, and Stamford will remain too warm for meaningful accumulation. Forecasters say these areas may see a short burst of wet snow before quickly changing over to rain as temperatures climb above freezing after sunrise.

Even so, visibility may briefly drop, and wet roads could become hazardous where early snowflakes mix in.

I-84 Corridor at Highest Risk for Morning Travel Delays

The most significant concern is for drivers traveling along Interstate 84 toward Hartford or New York. Because inland road temperatures will be colder, early-morning snow could produce slick patches and reduced traction until rain moves in later Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service notes there is still uncertainty in final totals, as small temperature shifts or a slightly different storm track could increase or decrease snowfall potential.

Winter Weather Advisories may be issued late Monday if confidence in accumulations grows.

Residents Urged to Prepare for Early-Morning Impacts

Forecasters recommend allowing extra travel time on Tuesday morning, especially in inland portions of Fairfield and New Haven counties and any higher terrain. Even light snow can create hazards before plows and salt crews respond.
