Winter Storm Watch for Maine and New Hampshire Warns of 6+ Inches of Snow and Hazardous Travel Through Tuesday Night

PORTLAND, Maine — Southern Maine and much of New Hampshire are preparing for the region’s first major winter storm of the season, with more than 6 inches of snow possible by late Tuesday night. The National Weather Service in Gray has issued a Winter Storm Watch covering major cities including Portland, Lewiston, Augusta, Concord, and Manchester, warning that both commutes Tuesday may be severely impacted.

Heaviest Snow Bands Expected Tuesday Morning and Afternoon

Forecasters expect snow to begin early Tuesday, intensifying as multiple heavy bands develop through the morning and midday hours.
Visibility may drop below a quarter mile, creating near-whiteout conditions at times across highways such as I-95, Route 1, and the Maine Turnpike.

As temperatures hover near freezing, untreated roads will quickly turn slick, and travel may become dangerous throughout the day.

Blowing and Drifting Snow Likely With Strong North Winds

In addition to heavy snow, strong north winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow across open areas.
Power outages are possible where wet, heavy snow combines with these gusts, especially in coastal and inland communities with vulnerable tree limbs and overhead utility lines.

Officials are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel, keep emergency kits in their vehicles, and allow road crews space to clear major routes.

Snow Ends Late Tuesday Night, but Wednesday Morning Could Still Be Slick

The storm will gradually taper off late Tuesday night. However, with temperatures staying below freezing, icy patches may persist into early Wednesday, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.

Drivers are advised to use caution and plan for extra travel time during the morning hours.
